A sad capture
On January 12, two men drove their truck down a blocked maintenance road to Oregon's 120 year old Cape Meares Lighthouse. For whatever reason, they started shooting at the lighthouse. Their shots broke 15 windows of the lighthouse and several pieces of the historic fresnel lens. This photo shows some of the bullet holes and in the lower right, the broken fresnel lens.
The lens was manufactured in Paris. The company still exists but no longer makes glass for lighthouses. Cost to repair the lighthouse is estimated over half a million dollars. Fortunately, there are still a handful of artists who can make a new lens. Support groups are working to raise funds for the repairs..
