2DPhotography  > Dennis Email > October 2008
This month's focus is on fall colors. Most of these shots were taken on a trip to northeast Pennsylvania to visit my sister, but there are some great colors this year right here in Portland, Oregon, too.

2DPhotography > Boulder field. This field is an unusual formation of glacial origin, striking doe to its flatness and relatibely large size. The field is approximately 400 by 1800 feet and is at least 12 feet deep, making it the largest formation of its kind in the Appalachian Mountains. It was formed not from the debris of a retreating glacier, but as a result of glacier-related climatic extremes on rock outcrops. Over time, repeated freezing and thawing caused the splitting apart of these outcrops and the gradual movement of the resulting boulders downslope to their present location. The formation has remained essentially unchanged for the past 20,000 years.

Built 1857-58 by the Federal Lighthouse Board.
The height of the light above sea level is 165 feet. Barnegat Lighthouse was built as a 1st order light, and was originally equipped with a Fresnel lens.
2DPhotography > Nicholson Bridge, in the little town of Nicholson, northeast Pennsylvania. The official name is the Tunkhannock Viaduct, but I grew up never hearing it called anything but the Nicholson Bridge.

"This reinforced concrete structure was the largest of its kind ever built when it went into service in 1915 on the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad. The bridge, 2,375 feet long and rising 240 feet above Tunkhannock Creek, was the focal point of a 39.6-mile relocation between Clarks Summit and Hallstead."
